My story

A microblogger and vlogger diving into the metaverse, virtual worlds, blockchain technoloy and more tech topics

How it all began

It all started in Jakarta, Indonesia, where we were eating at a hamburger restaurant. As we looked outside, we saw children helping tourists cross the street with an umbrella in hand. The boy who helped the tourist received a hamburger as a reward. He immediately ran to his friends and shared the hamburger with them, keeping the last piece for himself. It touches me every time.

The earthquake

On May 27, 2006, I found myself in the midst of an earthquake in Djokjakarta, together with my wife. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, with ongoing aftershocks. It was surreal, the suffering, the pain, and the devastation on people’s faces. While the hotel staff continued to work, I saw destroyed houses and desperate people across from the hotel.

At that moment, a strong urge to do something arose within me. I didn’t know exactly what yet, but I was determined to dedicate my life to creating something that would help people move forward.

Second Life

Once back in the Netherlands, I started searching and googling for technical solutions and ideas. That’s how I came across Second Life in 2007 through the media. Second Life is a virtual world where you can create an avatar and fly through user-created landscapes.

Within a few months, I had established a successful virtual clothing line and sold entire cities and shopping centers for real money. I immediately knew that Second Life was just the beginning and the biggest precursor to what we believe the Metaverse will become.

My clothing line in Second Life had nearly 100 stores spread across the virtual world, with an annual revenue in the five-figure range. It became clear to me: the future means that people from all over the world are interconnected to do business and expand networks in multiple virtual worlds.
